For those of you new to yoga, I’d like to give you a brief overview of the type of yoga I teach: Viniyoga. I am a certified Yoga Teacher at the 500 hour level and a certified Yoga Therapist at the 500 hour level. Viniyoga is a unique school of yoga that is focused on healing. Because we adapt the postures and breathing patterns to meet the needs of each individual, anyone can do Viniyoga. Although the underlying science of yoga is complex, we offer simple yoga practices that can have a profound effect on the practitioner’s mind, body, and spirit. There are six main points that differentiate Viniyoga from other types of yoga.
- We adapt the postures to each person’s body.
- We use repetition into and out of postures in addition to holding postures. This builds circulation, lubricates joints, as well as building strength.
- We emphasize the function of the postures rather than form.
- Sequencing is an important part of any practice, and we sequence postures to achieve different results. For example, we might create a sequence to address back pain. This would be very different than a sequence intended to address anxiety.
- We emphasize breath as the medium for movement in asana, and we adapt different breath patterns to produce different effects. For example, the breath pattern to de-stress would be very different from a breath pattern to create more focus and concentration.
- We use the refined art and science of sequencing to create yoga practices of different lengths, intensity, and focus to address the needs of the yoga practitioner. The focus is on the yoga student’s mind, body, and spirit.
I offer group classes and individual sessions. Group classes are focused on a particular condition of the group. Examples: Yoga to de-stress; Yoga for anxiety; Yoga for back pain; Yoga for Plus Sizes; Chair Yoga for Joint Relief.
Individual Sessions are one-on-one sessions which explore the client’s health concerns, daily living patterns, and goals for yoga. Over one or more sessions, I work with the client to refine a personal practice that will address the client’s concerns. This practice may include asana (postures and movement), pranayama (breathing exercises), guided relaxation and meditation.
